ABOUT

Bassist, composer, producer, and improviser, Luca Curcio moves fluidly between Berlin and Copenhagen, shaping a distinctive sound that merges improvisation, sampling culture, and deep rhythmic exploration. His music is indebted to the innovations of Black American musical traditions, drawing on their rhythmic depth and improvisational spirit. He integrates electronic aesthetics and contemporary approaches to sound and form, crafting a hybrid sonic language that transcends conventional genre boundaries. His influences range from Charles Mingus and Charlie Haden to A Tribe Called Quest, Gnawa trance music, and experimental producers like Flying Lotus.

Luca leads La BOMBA, a project that channels high-energy, groove-driven improvisation with a raw, physical intensity, grounded in a Nordic free jazz sensibility while incorporating propulsive, rhythmically focused compositions and sample-based textures. He also delves into the improvisational possibilities of the electric bass in his solo project, B.I.A.S (The Bass Is A Spaceship), utilizing circular sampling, micro-rhythmic transformations, and electronic effects to push its sonic and rhythmic boundaries.

Luca previously led the band A Quieter Space, featuring Danish-Nordic fuoriclasse musicians Emanuele Maniscalco on keys, Francesco Bigoni on sax, Jakob Høyer on drums, and Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh on guitar. Luca has been deeply involved in a growing network of improvisers exploring new rhythmic possibilities, collaborating with contemporary legends such as Andy Sheppard, Jon Balke, Kit Downes, William Parker, Kresten Osgood, and emerging forces such as Portuguese guitarist and post-beat theorist Mané Fernandes, Ukrainian guitar maverick Igor Osypov, and many more. As an integral member of Mané Fernandes' Enter the Squigg, his playing and production showcase his innovative approach to polyrhythm, timbre, and the fusion of digital and acoustic elements.

Luca studied at the Conservatory of Torino before relocating to Denmark in 2015 to attend the Rhythmic Music Conservatory of Copenhagen, where he worked with mentors such as Petter Eldh, Peter Evans, Ben Allison, Tyshawn Sorey, and Thomas Morgan. He continues to perform and produce internationally, pushing the boundaries of improvisation, composition, and rhythmic design through his evolving projects.
